Dupree played college football at Michigan State University and was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft. He played his entire 10-year professional career with the Cowboys from 1973 to 1983.

Dupree was known for his exceptional blocking skills as well as his ability to catch passes. He was a key part of the Cowboys' offense during his time with the team and helped them win Super Bowl XII in 1978.

In his career, Dupree recorded 267 receptions for 3,565 yards and 41 touchdowns. He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and was named a first-team All-Pro in 1976.
